Grand Pistachio is developing a series of theatrical experiences (live performance, installation, recorded episodes, workshops, and immersive dramas) for young audiences called City of Trash, that makes visible the invisible work of sanitation, honoring sanitation professionals who keep society healthy and safe. These experiences will help young people expand their trash consciousness by exploring the benefits and dangers of waste management, the cultural secrets trash reveals, and the lacking environmental justice of sanitation.
For most of us, our trash consciousness is limited to putting a plastic bottle in the recycling bin. We know little about the impact of our “throw-out” culture and the workers who face more danger than firefighters and police officers. Trash is a dirty topic we keep out of sight and mind, despite it being something that has major impacts on our health and environment.
City of Trash is in development and will begin touring in 2022.
